I can’t wait to see what awaits me in year two! :)
Hi! I think you are very talented. When did you start conceptual photography and who/what inspires you?
Hi Laura! Thank you so much. :) I started conceptual photography in August 2011, but it took a month for me to evolve into creating self-portraits. Nature and all of its beautiful, colorful elements, such as the sky are my main inspiration for imagery, but my concepts are really influenced by surrealism and fairy tales. I’m fascinated by the art of storytelling and how it can be implemented through photography. As far as who inspires me, I decided to focus on surreal/conceptual art when I visited the Dali museum in St. Petersburg, Florida last year. I also love the work of Brooke Shaden and Lissy Elle.
I always felt that my name suited me, but I had a time period where I thought my first and maiden names were too common (Lindsey Miller). There are a lot of Lindseys and Millers out there. There are also a lot of alternate spellings for Lindsey, so I found it hard to feel unique, especially because my name was often incorrectly spelled. I also got called “Leslie” a lot, but I’m not sure why.
Since 4th grade, I’ve used my middle name (Afton) for my art. I felt like Afton was a more personal expression of the Lindsey everyone knew, if that makes sense. After getting married, I decided to use my middle name and husband’s last name (Afton Dufoe). :) I think your name says a lot about you.
